The Perfect Date Review: A Charming Teen Romance with a Twist

Updated: Aug 6, 2024

In the world of teen rom-coms, "The Perfect Date" is a refreshing addition to the genre. Directed by Chris Nelson and written by Steve Bloom and Randall Green, the film follows Brooks Rattigan (played by Noah Centineo), a high school student with dreams of attending an Ivy League university but lacking the financial means to do so.

Brooks comes up with a plan to make some extra money by creating an app that allows girls to hire him as a stand-in date for any occasion. As he navigates through his new role, he finds himself falling for a wealthy girl named Celia Lieberman (played by Laura Marano), who hires him to be her date for her college applications.

The plot of "The Perfect Date" may seem predictable, but the film's charm lies in its execution. The chemistry between Centineo and Marano is undeniable, and their banter is both funny and heartwarming. Centineo's portrayal of Brooks is endearing, as he struggles to balance his dreams and his newfound career as a stand-in date.

The film also has a refreshing twist on the traditional teen rom-com formula. Instead of focusing solely on the romantic relationship between Brooks and Celia, "The Perfect Date" explores themes of self-discovery and the importance of following your own dreams. Brooks' journey towards realizing his own aspirations is just as compelling as his budding romance with Celia.

One of the standout aspects of "The Perfect Date" is its supporting cast. Odiseas Georgiadis plays Brooks' best friend Murph, who provides comedic relief and a grounded perspective on Brooks' new career. Matt Walsh and Camila Mendes also deliver solid performances as Brooks' father and his wealthy client, respectively.

The film's cinematography is also worth noting, as it captures the vibrant energy of New Orleans, where the story takes place. The city serves as a backdrop for Brooks and Celia's adventures, and the film's vibrant color palette adds to the romantic and playful tone.

In conclusion, "The Perfect Date" is a charming teen romance with a twist that is sure to leave audiences with a smile on their face. With its likable characters, witty humor, and heartwarming themes, it is a film that is well worth a watch.

Episode of the Week

That Love Podcast presents: Stolen Kiss — Episode 5

An audio romantic drama series about the impossible space between loving someone completely and loving yourself enough to become who you were always meant to be.

Logline: When Jack is offered the acting career he has dreamed of his entire life — three thousand miles away and for three years minimum — the only question that matters isn't whether he'll take it, but whether love is reason enough to let it go.

Episode Summary: Over two pints with his weathered agent Neville, Jack learns he has been offered a life-changing role on Law & Order: SVU — a three-year contract, a $2 million salary, and a filming schedule that would keep him in New York for most of the year. What should be the greatest moment of his life arrives at the worst possible time, with Diane's number flashing on his phone and a dinner date still warm in his memory. The tension erupts at Stephanie and Antonio's wedding, where Diane confronts Jack in the emptying church with thirty-two hours of silence between them, and the conversation they've been avoiding finally tears them open. Jack leaves anyway — and at the airport, surrounded by the people who love him most, he hands Stephanie a letter he couldn't say out loud. Diane was there the whole time, watching from behind oversized sunglasses, and when she finally reads his words, there is no anger, no outburst — just a woman pressing a love letter to her chest and walking out into a world that suddenly has a little less of him in it.
